Southampton steered further away from the relegation zone after a battling 0-0 draw with Everton.

The Saints welcomed the Toffees on the back of an eventful week which saw Nigel Adkins sacked and replaced by Argentine Coach Mauricio Pochettino.

A few banners and signs around the ground paid tribute to the former manager and showed their appreciation for his hard work.

But it didn’t stop the fans who greeted the new manager with great applause as he took his place for the first time as Southampton manager.

And his side got off to a flying start when Rickie Lambert, who was restored to the starting line up, saw an effort hit the post.

The striker was then at the forefront of the Saints attacks when he had a header cleared off the line before Jos Hooiveld volleyed straight at Tim Howard.

And with the missed opportunities there was always a threat they may get hit on the counter, which almost happened.

Fellaini had two chances early in the second half, one of which was saved by the feet of Artur Boruc, before the other landed luckily in the goalkeeper’s arms.

Changes were made by both sides, with Everton injecting pace with Victor Anichebe who started to cause the home side worries.

The substitute raced through before having a stinging shot parried away by Artur Boruc once again.

Overall, an encouraging performance and result from Pochettino’s men. The result means Saints remain in 15th place but move four points clear of the drop zone and now are only two behind Fulham.
