A Locks Heath builder has paid tribute to former Saints defender Kevin Moore who has died at the age of 55.
Richard Becheley, of Becheley Building Maintenance, said he was saddened by the news that the Southampton FC legend had passed away yesterday (April 29) on the same day as his birthday and wedding anniversary.
The former player had been suffering from a rare form of dementia, known as Pick’s Disease, with which he was diagnosed in 2008.
Saints fan Mr Becheley co-organised an annual golf fundraising event with Mr Moore’s friends and ex-teammates for a charity that supported families and sufferers of the disease. The series of golf days and fundraising events helped to pay for his care from the tens of thousands of pounds that were raised.
“When we were kids he was one of the players around at that time,” said Mr Becheley. “He was a household name in our house.
“When we heard he wasn’t very well we decided to do something to help him. He was only 55 when he died. That’s very young. It was his birthday and his wedding anniversary as well.
“Since we’ve been doing the fundraisers we’ve got to know his wife Mandy and his two brothers. I spoke to one of Kevin’s brothers yesterday and as much as it’s not a good time for them, I think they’re kind of relieved it’s over for them.
“It was really hard for everyone and he required a lot of care. He can rest in peace now.”
Although he has no current plans for a fundraiser in Kevin’s memory, Mr Becheley said it was likely that one would be organised in due course.

Kevin made 185 appearances for Saints, scoring 13 goals, from 1987 to 1994.
He also played for Grimsby, while he had spells with Oldham, Bristol Rovers and Fulham during his career.
He lived in Otterbourne but regular care meant he had to leave his home and was initially looked after at the White House care home, in Curdridge.
As his condition worsened he was moved to the Maypole Nursing Centre, in Hedge End.
Mr Becheley added: “It was a privilege to start the benefit fund for Kevin and his family, alongside Lisa Catlin, Ian Ritchie and Matt Le Tissier.
“It’s a very sad day and my thoughts and wishes go out to Kevin’s family and friends.”
Hundreds of messages have been posted on Twitter paying tribute, including one from Southampton FC, which stated they plan to post an obituary on their website.
