Pompey brought the curtain down on a roller-coaster season with a performance that summed up the campaign – dead and buried early on but fought back strongly.
It took just six minutes for Shrewsbury to net the first goal as Connor Goldson rose highest to nod home his first league goal.
And on 37 minutes they extended their advantage when Joe Jacobson took a free kick that deflected past Simon Eastwood in the Portsmouth goal to double the Shrews’ lead.
Akwasi Asante, turned well to score and put the Shrews into a commanding 3-0 lead.
And that finally seemed to be the spark that got Pompey going.
On the hour mark Jed Wallace’s shot was fumbled by the home goalkeeper and Ashley Harris tapped in from close range.
And then Patrick Agyemang reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to smash in another and make it 3-2.
But despite the late rally Pompey could not get a third. Thy now go into a summer of rebuilding ahead of a League Two campaign next season.
